Title:
Put your Money Where your Charter is: from Theory to Practice in Archaeological Tourism
Content:
This roundtable is organised by the EAA Working Party: Integrating the Management of Archaeological Heritage and Tourism.
If we assessed the overall state of archaeological heritage solely by the rate of accretion of international documents of different significance or character, ranging from recommendations to conventions, we might be tempted
to conclude that everything is in perfect order. However, it is no secret that in reality the practice often lags significantly behind theoretical advances promoting or stipulating one or another approach in the management of
heritage. This, in turn, begs the question of what we could and should do to remedy this situation and help raise the awareness of the importance, value and potential role such documents—for instance, the International
Cultural Tourism Charter, Siem Reap Declaration, or the Thessalia Charter for Sustainable Cultural Tourism—could play in our endeavour to manage our archaeological heritage in the best possible way. The roundtable welcomes discussants willing to offer their practical experience with advisory documents focusing on various aspects of management and utilization of heritage places.
