Title & Content

Title:
Archaeology Museums: types, heritage valorisation and social dialogue
Content:
The presence of Archaeology Museums and Interpretive Centres in a territory is a fundamental asset for the valorisation and protection of the archaeological heritage both inland and underwater. The way in which archaeology museums are organised in a territory may take different forms, being one of them that of a set of public institutions coordinated by one them that has the responsibility of drafting the main strategies for the whole group. A very different type is that of a one-site centre focusing on the study, dissemination and preservation of its own local heritage. In between these two forms there are other possibilities such as thematic networks formed by different institutions working together on specific fields like dissemination and preservation policies. These three types represent distinct interests that have implications in the possibilities for how negotiations take place with regional and local authorities, for the development and promotion of social dialogue, and for the production of interpretations and the construction of identities. The aim of this session is to encourage debate on the different types and models of governance and their impact in how they define their role as social agents. We would also like to discuss about how effective these different forms of archaeological museums are in enhancing heritage awareness.
